OCEAN PADDLE BOARDS REVIEWS

Blackfin Model V

BEST FOR ADVENTURES AND FITNESS

WHAT I LIKEWHAT I DON’T LIKE
– Very well stability

– Fast

– Above-average maneuverability using advanced techniques

– Great tracking

– Feels solid

– Extremely high weight capacity

– Fairly effective hand pump

– The included paddle is great for a kit one

– Bag wheels make transporting easier

– Makes a very versatile touring SUP
– A slightly bigger deck pad would be good

– The kit paddle twists ever so slightly

IDEAL CHOICE FOR:

  • Adventurers looking for a faster touring paddle board
  • People looking to practice fitness on the water
  • Paddlers looking for a board with a really high weight capacity for gear or to paddle with kids

GREAT IN/FOR:

Blackfin Model V Review

  • GLIDE & SPEED

The Blackfin Model V is faster than many other touring SUPs and the fastest in the Blackfin lineup. Its relatively narrow width played a huge role in that and made it glides fairly efficiently.

  • STABILITY

This board has very well stability due to the quality materials and carbon fiber reinforced rails used to make it feel and be solid.

  • TRACKING

The Blackfin Model V is able to do a great job at keeping a straight line due to its line longer length and fin setup.

  • MANEUVERABILITY

What made this board a faster one played against its maneuverability.

The Blackfin Model V is difficult to turn but with advanced techniques like the step-back turn, it is not the case.

You can pretty easily step back to lift the nose out of the water to turn the board while remaining balanced.

  • PORTABILITY

The board alone weighs 30 lbs, so it will not be very easy to carry on your back, especially for very long distances but the wheels placed on the outside of the backpack make it easy to roll with it by kids as by adults.

You also have three carry handles that make carrying your board to and out of the water easy and possible without any extra help.

  • EASE OF INFLATION

The ease of inflation depends largely on your level of fitness, but you can expect to spend around 7 to 15 minutes to complete the task.

Using the kit pump to inflate this board won’t leave you out of breath when you’re done.

  • ACCESSORIES

The Blackfin Model V comes with everything needed to start ocean paddling.

Starting by the paddle, it is fairly a good one for a kit paddle. It has a nylon blade that makes it durable and a carbon-fiber shaft to make it lighter.

The backpack you get is made with better materials and offers some more storage

Gili Adventure 12’

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT

WHAT I LIKEWHAT I DON’T LIKE
– Easy to maneuver

– Impressive weight capacity

– So feature-rich

– Versatile

– Great value

– Great included kit

– Lightweight
– Deck pad traction could be improved

– For the package price, I would like to see a dual-chamber triple-action hand pump

IDEAL CHOICE FOR:

  • Adventurers looking for a stable paddle board
  • Paddlers seeking a high weight capacity to bring kids and or pets
  • Paddlers looking for a SUP that they can customize their paddle board for any situation

GREAT IN/FOR:

  • Friendly ocean waves
  • Touring
  • Recreational paddling
  • Flat water

QUICK SPECS

  • Price range: Medium to high
  • Use: Adventure
  • Dimensions: 12′ x 32″ x 6″
  • Weight: 23 lbs
  • Weight capacity: 330 lbs
  • Comes with: Fiberglass-shaft paddle, Backpack, 2-Stage pump, Leash, 3 fins, Repair kit, Valve wrench

Gili Adventure 12’ Review

  • GLIDE & SPEED

With its overall shape, the Gili Adventure 12’ performs surprisingly well in terms of speed, making it efficient over long distances and a solid choice for up to medium-length trips.

  • STABILITY

Due to the board construction and overall shape, this paddleboard is stable in almost all conditions.

Compared to its smaller sibling, the Gili Adventure 11’, it is more stable even for larger paddlers.

  • TRACKING

The Gili Adventure 12’ tracking is really pleasing, it gives you the ability to paddle 10+ strokes before having to switch the side.

  • MANEUVERABILITY

The lighter weight of this board makes it easy to turn and change direction with just simple paddling techniques.

Advanced turning techniques, like the step-back, are easier to do with the help of the tail diamond grooves and the raised step pad.

  • PORTABILITY

For its overall size, Gili Adventure 12’ is considered fairly lightweight, which makes carrying it very comfortable for any sort of long-distance with the very thick and well-padded backpack straps.

To get the board out or to the water, you have a nice padded center handle that feels comfortable.

  • EASE OF INFLATION

Inflating the Gili Adventure 12’ using the kit manual pump is a bit of a struggle, especially at the end.

Whatever the experience, I still recommend upgrading to an electric paddleboard pump.

  • ACCESSORIES

The Gili Adventure 12’ comes with everything needed to start ocean paddling.

Starting with the paddle, you have to choose between three options: the full carbon option that is worth the investment, the carbon fiber/nylon blade option that makes the best choice for weight and durability, and the fiberglass/nylon blade option that is well made but not that light).

The pump you get is, fortunately, a simple single chamber dual-stage one that makes you struggle, especially at those last few PSI because its chamber is not wide or voluminous.

The backpack has very thick and well-padded backpack straps, combined with a fairly thick back pad that makes carrying everything inside very comfortable.

Unfortunately, it does not come with wheels at the bottom for easy transport but I don’t see the need to since this board is lightweight.

NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6

BEST FOR RACING

WHAT I LIKEWHAT I DON’T LIKE
– Really fast

– Well crafted

– Comes with the best-in-class included paddle,

– Solid pump and backpack

– Excellent value

– Very good tracking
– Not very stable, but it is expected because it is not marketed for beginners

– Not very maneuverable, but remain fairly responsive with advanced techniques

IDEAL CHOICE FOR:

  • Paddlers looking for long distance paddling SUP
  • Lighter paddlers with intermediate paddling skills
  • Paddlers weighing over 150 lbs if they are more advanced
  • People looking for reasonably priced 12’6” ocean board

GREAT IN/FOR:

  • Flat water
  • Racing
  • Traveling

QUICK SPECS

  • Price range: High
  • Use: Racing
  • Dimensions: 12’6 x 28” x 6”
  • Weight: 23 lbs
  • Weight capacity: 350 lbs
  • Comes with: Carbon fiber paddle, 2-chamber 3-stage pump, Wheeled backpack, Leash, 3-fins, Repair kit

NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 Review

  • GLIDE & SPEED

The NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 is really fast and this is possible with its extremely streamlined overall shape and width of just 28” which makes perfectly vertical strokes possible even for smaller paddlers.

  • STABILITY

This board is not very stable and it is expected because it is not for beginners.

To feel stable on it, you have to be really light or paddling at a reasonable pace.

  • TRACKING

Even without a three-fin setup, the NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 does a very good job at keeping a straight line due to its streamlined shape and the narrow width that makes very vertical paddle strokes very easy to achieve.

  • MANEUVERABILITY

The NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 wouldn’t be very maneuverable for beginner paddlers, takes some practice for intermediate paddlers but remains fairly responsive with advanced turning techniques.

  • PORTABILITY

Because this board weighs 23 lbs, which is considered lightweight, you can comfortably carry it on your back for a mile or two.

To get it to the water or out of it, you have three carry handles that you can use.

  • EASE OF INFLATION

Inflating the NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 using the kit pump doesn’t feel overly straining even for smaller and lighter paddlers.

  • ACCESSORIES

The NIXY Manhattan G4 12’6 comes with everything needed to start racing.

Starting with the paddle, it is impressive. It is lightweight and feels solid and its adjustment system does not wiggle.

The hand pump you get is a two-chamber three-stage one that is powerful and efficient even for small and lighter paddlers.

The kit backpack is very solid and feels comfortable even if you hike with it for two miles. What I also like about it is the wheels at the bottom that makes transport easier.

– Lightweight adventure board

– The hand pump you get is small for such a large board like the Atoll 11′

TODAY’S PRICE

Atoll 11′ Review

  • GLIDE & SPEED

The Atoll 11′ has a smooth glide that makes your paddling experience in calm water conditions fun and relaxing.

It also maintains its momentum once you get going but when you approach 400 lbs of weight on it, it will slow down a bit as you’re paddling in the water.

  • STABILITY

Even it is lightweight, this board is good at stability. You have a grippy deck pad and enough space and volume to feel steady on it.

  • TRACKING

This board is able to keep a straight line without too much effort even for beginners and this is due to its 8’’ composite center fin.

  • MANEUVERABILITY

Even though this board is longer than traditional all-around paddleboards, it is still maneuverable.

Its lighter weight makes it easy to perform advanced turning techniques.

After you get used to this paddle board, you can easily dodge rocks, trees, and paddlers around you.

  • PORTABILITY

The Atoll 11′ is very easy to hike with due to its construction that weighs just 21 lbs.

Getting the board out of the water, you have a carry handle in the center that is covered with neoprene for a soft and cozy grip.

  • EASE OF INFLATION

Inflating the Atoll 11′ using the kit pump takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

The simple hand pump you get makes the inflation task more difficult compared to the dual-chamber triple-action hand pump.

  • ACCESSORIES

The Atoll 11′ comes with everything needed to start ocean paddling.

Starting with the paddle, you get a 29 oz paddle that has a smooth fiberglass shaft that is comfortable to hold and a nylon blade that is rigid and flexible.

The kit pump is a single-chamber, dual-action one that is lightweight and compact. For such a large board like the Atoll 11′, I would like to see a more powerful and efficient hand pump.

The backpack is built to last with extra room to easily fit your SUP without struggles. Another thing that I appreciate about this backpack is its U-shaped opening that makes putting or getting the SUP quick and easy.

BOTE HD Aero 11′6

– Stable in almost all conditions

– High weight capacity

– Plenty of included accessories

– Comes with a durable paddle

– The paddle sheath makes taking selfies or a sip of beverage easier

– Fairly easy to turn using the step-back technique

– Good looking
– The kit paddle is heavy

– Comes with no leash

IDEAL CHOICE FOR:

  • Large paddlers seeking a high weight capacity board to bring a kid, pet, or equipement
  • Beginners looking for an extremely stable paddle board

  • Ocean
  • Flat water
  • SUP fishing

QUICK SPECS

BOTE HD Aero 11′6 Review

  • GLIDE & SPEED

Due to its long waterline, the BOTE HD Aero 11′6 glides fairly efficiently across rivers and lakes.

It is not the fastest board but it remains faster than what you would expect from an iSUP of its size.

  • STABILITY

What makes this board good for beginners is its stability that inspires confidence. The BOTE HD Aero 11′6 really very stable in most water conditions.

  • TRACKING

Compared to other SUP boards like the Blackfin Model XL, it doesn’t track as well.

Another thing that played against the board tracking is its width of 34” which makes it harder for paddlers with short arms to execute perfectly vertical strokes.

  • MANEUVERABILITY

On this board, you have to perform intermediate paddle techniques to stop it from going where you don’t want to.

Executing advanced turning techniques like the step back one is fairly easy due to the very wide tail and deck pad that covers the rear of the board.

  • PORTABILITY

The heavyweight of this board makes it not easy to carry it on your back, especially for long distances.

Using the travellink SUP carrier system (sold separately) makes carrying the board easier for smaller paddlers.

  • EASE OF INFLATION

Inflating the BOTE HD Aero 11′6 using the kit pump takes about 10 minutes and it does take a fair amount of work.

  • ACCESSORIES

The BOTE HD Aero 11′6 paddle board includes many accessories except the ankle leash.

The kit paddle is very durable and has a grippy shaft. Even though it is on the entry-level side of SUP paddles, it’s not a bad paddle at all.

The hand pump uses just a single chamber. It gets the job done sufficiently but it is not efficient compared to premium kit pumps.

The backpack is made with high-quality materials and feels relatively comfortable on the back.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST INFLATABLE OCEAN PADDLE BOARD

Getting the best ocean paddle board is not easy. This is why I wrote you his buying guide.

BOARD TYPE

The best boards for the ocean are the touring paddleboards because they can be used in flat water and downwind, and are faster because they are a bit longer.

HULL SHAPE

Paddleboards with a pointed nose make the paddling smooth because they slice through water by pushing the water around the nose to the sides and making the board keep a straight line.
