FLEECE PULLOVER PATAGONIA BUYING GUIDE

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

It’s common in today’s synthetic fleece to use recycled materials like plastic bottles. It also uses multiple fabrics to have a soft non-itch feel.

The two most common types of fleece are:

  • Synthetic

Being usually made of PET, synthetic fleece holds less than 1% of its weight in water, repels water, and keeps its insulating properties when wet.

Characteristics of synthetic fleece are lightweight, warm, and soft.

  • Merino

Merino, which is more sustainable than synthetic fleece because it comes from a breed of sheep, is a soft, non-itchy, breathable fleece that is able to warn off odor.

FLEECE WEIGHT

Fleece weight refers to the thickness of the construction used material.

There are four fleece weight categories which are :

  • < 100g/m²: Ultra-Lightweight

Ultra-lightweight fleece is what athletes wear to beat their running personal best time because it’s thin and can be worn as a base layer.

Being quick-drying, extremely moisture-resistant, and breathable makes it best for running or outdoor exercising in warm weather.

  • 100g/m²: Lightweight

Lightweight fleece pullovers are great mid-layer on moderately cold days because they can absorb condensation without chilling you.

If you are asking what is a microfleece? Any fleece that is 100g/m² up to 199g/m² is considered a microfleece.

They work great for running or climbing because they aren’t too thick to restrict movement and are flexible.

Ventilating heat when moving lets you walk without the need to stop in order to cool down your body.

  • 200g/m²: Midweight

Midweight fleece can sometimes be called Polartec Thermal Pro, R2, or TKA 200.

Midweight fleece is the most versatile because it works ideal as an outer layer in cooler weather or when you’re less active and can fit under a jacket.

Compared to microfleeces, midweight fleece offers higher insulation and comfort but is less flexible.

When moving, midweight fleece pullovers are an all-rounder that provides great breathability and also keeps you warm when resting.

  • 300g/m²: Heavyweight

Heavyweight fleece that is called sometimes Polartec Thermal Pro High Loft, R3, or TKA 300 is the least versatile of the fleeces because its flexibility is very limited and if your exercise with it, you will quickly overheat because its the most insulating of the three types.

With its characteristics, heavyweight fleeces are the ideal outer layer for walking, when you’re stationary or working around the house in the winter.

FEATURES

HOODS

I prefer fleece pullovers with hoods because they increase warmth without decreasing breathability.

A fleece pullover with a hood means added protection from rain, and when it’s underneath a helmet, it helps you retain warmth by blocking wind from getting through your neck. All that sacrificing its comfortable fit.

If you can get a hooded fleece pullover with a drawstring, you will get more versatility by having the ability to adjust the hood to suit your preferences.

HIGH-NECK

A high neck is another feature that can be useful for you. It keeps your neck warm without having to carry additional accessories like a scarf.

BREATHABILITY

The fleece pullover’s ability to cool you down is another thing that you should consider when buying because it’s what keeps you dry and warm.

Because breathability has a direct correlation with the weight of the fleece, some companies started using lightweight fleece in key areas in order to maximize breathability.

Grid-style fleece is another method that is used to make fleece more breathable. In this new technique, the inside of the fleece is checkered with thin channels in between thicker squares in order to let hot air escape and don’t overheat your body.

ADJUSTABLE HEM

Fleece pullovers with an adjustable hem let you restrict air from getting inside making it more windproof.

Other than that, it let you also have a better fit.

POCKETS

Pockets let you have plenty of options to carry things like keys, nutrition bars, mobile phones, or heat up your hands in colder temperatures.

Pockets’ different placements serve different needs. For example, a pocket in the chest is for times when a climbing harness is worn or for things you have easy access for.

ZIPS

Even though zips add weight, I still found them useful because they let you cool down when overheating and make putting the pullover on and taking it back off easier.

THUMB LOOPS

Thumb loops are what keep the fleece pullover sleeves firmly in place and not riding up while being active.

Personally, I don’t like fleece pullovers with thumb loops because where I live is not that very cold.

FIT AND CUT

Your fleece pullover fit and cut depends on your intended use.

Fleece pullovers are made with a slightly longer cut in the torso in order to tuck it in without falling out during activity.

You can also maximize the heat and breathability of your fleece pullover by getting you a snug fit.

ANTI-PILLING

Anti-pilling fleece prevents pills from appearing on the fabric surface after washing and drying.

Apart from old clothes appearance, having little balls or pills on your fleece pullover affects also its heat capabilities.

DWR FABRIC

Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating increases the water resistance, reduces drying time while maintaining the breathability of the fleece pullover.

With a DWR-treated pullover fleece, you can handle a little bit of rain in order to make it to your car or home before getting wet.
