HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WATERPROOF DUFFEL BAG

DUFFEL BAG CAPACITY

The duffel bag capacity is measured in liters and it’s one of the most important features to consider.

  • Small Duffels: 25 to 50 liters

Duffel bags in this size range are ideal for going solo on overnight and weekend trips with limited gear, for the gym and everyday life.

These are small enough to be carry-on compatible, saving you money and checking bags time.

Speaking of carry-on, US airlines do not have a universal carry-on size, but duffel bags around 40 liters or up to the size of 22 x 14 x 9-inch are quite common.

  • Medium Duffels: 50 to 75 liters

This is the capacity range that fits travels that are willing to check in their duffel bag but they will not bring bulky outdoor gear.

Even with trips for about 7 days, if you are experienced and you bring with you just the essentials, a 60 liters duffel bag is enough for you. But for mountaineering that requires heavy gear, you may need to go up to 70L.

  • Large-duffels: 75 liters+

Duffel bags this big are ideal for specialized use, such as angling or boating for more than 7 days trips or for multiple people gear.

It’s important to keep in mind that these bags can get heavy fast, so keep an eye on the total weight to not making it useless by being hard to lift.

In another way, bigger isn’t always mean better.

One thing I want you to know is that, if you need a 100 liters duffel bag and you can go with one bag of 60L and another of one 40L, it will be beneficial for you when with airlines and to get the most efficient use of space in car trunks for example.

DESIGN/STYLE

How many pockets do you need to organize small items? How do you want to access what’s inside? Are you going to carry it as hand luggage are all plays a role in the style of your best duffel bag.

These are some styles of duffel bags:

  • Cylinder Duffels

These are ideal for people that all they need and think about is space.

  • Shoulder Straps Duffels
  • Drawstring Duffels

These are ideal for those who are always on the move. Drawstring duffels will not slow you down when it comes to packing.

  • Wheeled Duffels

These are ideal for people air traveling a lot who want the ability to wheel their bags and the convenience of a duffel at the same time.

Some of the drawbacks of wheeled duffel bags are that they are hard to transport in areas without rolling surfaces, making you use the only lifting method which is the carry handle.

The second drawback is that the added rolling parts make them having more parts that can be broken, which are hard to replace.

COLOR

Color is also an important thing to consider, especially when you are using your duffel bag for technical uses like hunting, paddle boarding, kayaking, etc.

For water sports, I recommend you to go with high visibility colors to make it easy to found by others in the case of getting lost.

If you practice hunting, I recommend you green, brown, or black or a mix of all in order to blend with the nature around you.

HANDLES AND STRAPS

GRAB HANDLES

Grab handles that make duffel bags so versatile and easy to work with are attached to the duffel bag on the sides and are a great way to quickly lift and slide your duffel bag in your car trunk for example.

DUFFEL BACKPACK STRAPS

I prefer duffel bags with backpack straps because they let you carry them in a comfortable way.

Premium duffel bags with backpack straps have them lightly padded and removable in order to detach and store inside when needed.

COMPRESSION STRAPS

Compression straps are what shift the strain from weaker places like zippers, stop what’s inside from shifting side to side during transport, and also helps with making your bag more compact.

Compression straps become more handy and essential on larger duffels.

SHOULDER STRAPS

Shoulder straps are what I prefer in duffel bags with smaller capacity because they let you quickly carry your duffel when you are in hurry.

Shoulder straps are only comfortable to use for a short distance. When you walk for longer, you will start to feel less comfortable, especially if it’s heavy.

DURABILITY

Durable duffel bags make your money worth more because the bag will last you longer.

Durability in bags is expressed by the number of deniers. The higher the number, the tougher the bag fabric will be.

Examples of durable fabrics are ballistic nylon and TPE fabric laminate.

Polyurethane fabric is less durable compared to ballistic nylon and TPE fabric laminate, but it resists water more.

Moreover, how beefy the zippers and the seams are, and how many carrying straps it has are also a way to know the duffel bag’s durability.

WATERPROOFNESS

High-end waterproof bags can be submerged in water and still keep their content dry. An example of these bags is Filson Medium Dry Duffle.

There is an IP code that is used to standardize the resistance of products like duffel bags against liquids and it’s referred to as IPX.

This standard starts from IPX0 up to IPX8, with IPX0 meaning no water-resistant at all and IPX8 meaning it can protect what’s inside from over 3 feet at the bottom of a pool for example.

Any duffel bag that has IPX7 or IPX8 is considered waterproof.

Another way to determine the level of a bag’s water resistance is the denier, the higher it is the more resistance it has against water.

WEIGHT

While the duffel bag weight might not be important for some like people on boats or people transporting their bags in a vehicle, it is still a thing to consider for people like kayakers or paddle boarders because they have a weight limit.

PACKABILITY

Packable duffel bags become handy when you want to stow a second empty duffel inside another one.

REI Co-op Roadtripper and Patagonia Black Hole are examples of duffel bags that pack into a packing cube that comes with them.

Unfortunately, in order for a duffel bag to be packable, most of the time they use less durable fabrics.

POCKETS

Personally, I prefer having more than what I need of pockets in my bag because it’s my way of keeping everything organized.

Sometimes, I can allocate one of my bag pockets for a single USB stick, because this way, when I’m in hurry, I can quickly check if I have it or not.

For waterproofness, some waterproof duffel bags are sometimes waterproof only for the items inside the main compartment and not in the outside pockets.

This is why you should opt for a waterproof duffel bag with inside pockets, this way you keep your belongings organized and waterproof at the same time.

ZIPPER ACCESS SHAPE

My number one zipper access shape on duffel bags is the large U-shaped ones.

Duffels with large U-shaped zipper access come in handy, especially when full because they provide you easy access for packing and unpacking.

PRICE

Waterproof duffel bag prices start around $40 up to $400. Al most of the time, you get what you pay for.

The high price duffel bags are most of the time made using durable fabrics.

DAISY CHAINS

Waterproof duffel bag with plenty of daisy chains

Daisy chains or lash points are what help you secure your duffel bag to your motorbike, your raft, on top of a vehicle, or saddle it to a mule without worrying about losing it.
