WHY DO YOU #CHOOSEADVENTURE?
I Choose Adventure because that's when I'm the best version of myself.
WHAT DOES ADVENTURE MEAN TO YOU?
To me, adventure just means heading into something without being completely sure of the outcome.
ADVENTURE MAKES YOU FEEL...
Adventure makes me feel brave. (Sometimes I just feel that way afterward... I'll admit to feeling anything but brave while I'm mid-adventure sometimes.)
HOW HAS ADVENTURE CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Seeking adventure has really shaped my life. I try to do it on the day-to-day, too, which means going outside my comfort zone in professional and personal settings. It's what inspired me to take a leap and start doing my dream job.
FAVORITE TYPE OF ADVENTURE?
My favorite type of adventure is Type II fun.
FAVORITE ADVENTURE TO DATE?
Favorite adventures to date, in no particular order: traversing the Harding Icefield on skis, backpacking in the Utah desert, marriage.
WAS THERE A TIME YOU FELT IN OVER YOUR HEAD IN YOUR ADVENTURES? HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH IT?
More than I care to admit. One particular time on the Big Island in Hawaii comes to mind. We were backpacking and encountered some pretty scary river crossings after a big storm. I dug deep, then took a step back to make a plan. I also vowed to be more diligent about checking the weather forecast from then on.
WHAT IS YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE PLANNED?
My next big adventure is a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters.
YOUR ULTIMATE ADVENTURE BUCKET LIST IS?
My ultimate adventure bucket list is growing by the day! A few highlights: extended climbing/bikepacking trip through Eastern Europe, packrafting and ski mountaineering in Mongolia, boating the Yukon River from source to sea.
THE PERSON/PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE ME MOST TO TAKE AN ADVENTURE...
My partner, Bix.
ADVENTURE ITEM YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
I'll keep it simple: I don't leave for a big trip without my trusty backpack. (It's a Deuter.)
HOW DOES ADVENTURE IMPACT YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE? (WORK, PLAY, FAMILY CHOICES, ETC.)
I try to seek adventure in all aspects of my life. Sometimes this just means striking up a conversation with someone I don't know well; sometimes it means quitting a stable job to pursue my passion and write full-time.
HAVING A VOICE. WHAT ARE CAUSE-BASED TOPICS/ISSUES YOU ARE SPEAKING OR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT? HOW CAN OTHERS HELP?
I'm passionate about making outdoor spaces safe and welcoming for everyone. This means volunteering and donating money to organizations like Big City Mountaineers, which takes city kiddos on wilderness adventures and gives them the tools to be good citizens and leaders. Head to bigcitymountaineers.org to volunteer or donate!
WORDS OF WISDOM OR ENCOURAGEMENT TO SOMEONE WANTING TO EMBRACE MORE ADVENTURE IN THEIR LIFE?
Never stop learning! Keep asking questions, getting other people's perspectives, trying new things until something sticks. Adventuring = learning new things.
BIGGEST FEAR YOU EVERY CONQUERED IN YOUR LIFE?
This sounds like such a cliche, but learning to commit was a big one for me. Whether it was in personal relationships or jobs or pulling a big move on gear, I've always been scared to really commit. That started changing when I met my partner, Bix, and I've since been working on just going for it whenever possible. It's still tough to take the leap (literally and metaphorically!) sometimes, but I'm getting there.
