Meet Founder of Corbeaux Clothing and Adventure mom extraordinaire: Darcy Conover
What does it mean to be an adventure mom to you?
To be a mom who introduces the love of adventure to her child- to teach her to be brave enough to take calculated risks, confident enough to work through mistakes and to be driven by curiosity. Also, to lead and teach by example through maintaining my own identity as an adventurer.
How has having children impacted how you choose adventure?
Before having our daughter, my adventure days seemed limitless. Now, however, there are babysitters and schedules to juggle, so I am a bit pickier with my adventures and my partners. If I am going to have time away from my daughter, I want it to be well worth it!
What tips and inspiration can you provide to moms out there that still want to get out and play, but struggle to find time, etc.
Lack of time is the toughest piece and probably the most widespread excuse. In my experience, moms have to consciously make time to maintain a healthy sense of self- whether that means a VERY early morning run before the family wakes up, or asking a friend to come over during nap time so you can get to a yoga class. There is definitely sacrifice on some level, so you just have to decide what is most important to you. For example, I have given up that extra hour (or two) of couch time after dinner and now go to bed around 9 – 9:30 most nights so that I can get up early to make time for adventure.
My husband and I are lucky to have a lot of family nearby to help with babysitting. Instead of spending money on going out to dinner, we spend our “date” time in the mountains- climbing a peak, skiing or biking. It is what we did together before the baby and what brings us closer together so we can more easily handle the challenges of having a child as a team.
How are you instilling adventure as a way of life in your children?
Adventure is one of the keystones of our life as a couple, so our daughter is engulfed in it on a daily basis. Since she was born we have brought her hiking, camping and biking. Instead of spending money on a fancy nursery, we have spent it on baby camping and adventure gear. It has NOT been easy- there is a lot of planning and packing involved and there have been plenty of missteps - moments we have all looked at each other covered in poop or throw-up and thought what are we doing? But, we all seem to learn a bit more with each adventure- I have become a more patient mother- instead of pushing my physical abilities, I have learned to slow down and look at the leaves, or follow a caterpillar, and our daughter is learning that nature and adventure are an important part of our lives.
What is the legacy you want to leave for your children?
I hope we are instilling a love for the outdoors in our child. But, she may soon grow into a teenager that dislikes camping and getting dirty. If that happens, I hope the lessons of curiosity, bravery and strength carry over to all facets of her life. And, at the very least we will have the memories and she will have the basic knowledge of pitching a tent.
Your favorite part of being a mom is?
To be honest, I did not have high expectations of motherhood because I was (selfishly) nervous about loosing my own adventure time. So, it has really blown my expectations out of the water! One of my favorite parts of being a mom is watching my daughter learn. At this stage (18mos) I can actually see her thinking things through before making a decision- whether its on the playground or making a puzzle. It is so fun to try to see the world through her eyes. Simple things like seeing the seasons change -looking out the window in the morning to see that the ground is now green instead of white and then walking outside to actually feel the grass between your toes (it tickles!).
The things I have taken for granted for so many years become so magical again with young children. It truly is an adventure in itself.
